Conservation Genetics Specialist Group
CGSG is a Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission of IUCN. Out mission is to promote the use of genetics in conservation management and decision making, to assist the Commission in applying genetics to threatened species and to lead the development and analysis of genetic data in conservation.
CGSG’s role is to promote research into the genetics of threatened species by promoting genetic principles as underpinning endangered species management, fostering collaborations and providing guidelines for best practice in research methods
A large part of CGSG’s mission is to assist other Specialist Groups within the SSC to carry out necessary research for their mission, including in applying molecular systematics, understanding population genetic diversity and improving the in-situ and ex-situ management of individuals and the genes they carry.
CGSG will promote and publicise important initiatives, report the latest research findings and disseminate relevant information to conservation managers and policy makers to advance and enhance awareness of genetics in biodiversity conservation worldwide.
